Salvation Army Women's Auxiliary of Vicksburg
.From the 30 women who organized the Vicksburg Chapter of the Salvation Army Women's Auxiliary in 1976 to the nearly 80 members in 2018, these women have served with the "Heart to God, Hand to Man" philosophy of the worldwide Salvation Army. Serving as a fund-raising and volunteer service group, the volunteers of the Auxiliary have impacted thousands of people in need of services provided by The Salvation Army.
Fund-Raisers and Service Projects Book Bag Project Since 2012, Auxiliary members have assisted in collecting school supplies, book bags, and funds for purchasing these for students in need. Many filled book bags were distributed in 2017 to students within Warren and Claiborne counties.
Christmas Angel Tree Program Every year Christmas gifts are distributed to hundreds of children and to over 100 elderly residents served through The Salvation Army Angel Tree Program. (See photos above.)
Camp Hidden Lake Summer camp is provided to local inner city children, along with backpacks & supplies.Several students are sent to music conservatory as well.
Mission 66 Diner A commercial stove for the Mission 66 Diner was purchased, and the Auxiliary continues to contribute food, money, and supplies to feed the elderly and handicapped. Donations toward the purchase of a freezer and continued ice machine maintenance were made.
Auxiliary Volunteers Members assist each week in The Salvation Army office and at the Family Store.
Disaster Relief During the Great Flood of 2011, food, cleaning supplies, as well as some clothing, household goods and furniture were distributed to 418 families. Auxiliary members manned mobile canteens in Yazoo City after a tornado hit and devastated the area. Members also raised funds and had a clothing drive and household goods drive for Eagle Lake tornado victims.
Fund Raising Events
SAWA Soup & Sandwich Luncheon, Silent Auction, & Bake Sale; Luau and in August 2010, we added a Mexican Dinner. In February 2011, we added a variety and musical revue, Affairs of the Heart, which has become an annual fundraiser.
The Family Thrift Store has relocated back to the original 530 Mission 66 location. It is open weekdays from 10 am until 2 pm, and Saturdays from 10 am until noon. Please drop-off usable clean donations during store hours or after hours if they will fit in the drop box. There is another drop box located at the corner or Mission 66 and Clay Street.
Christmas Kettle Program Volunteer Bell Ringers (groups and individuals) who can give at least 4 hours are needed during the Christmas Season.
